Thailand police have arrested a former nurse whom they believed was involved in selling foetuses, which can be turned into Luk Krok (child ghosts).
The scam was exposed after a hunter accidentally found 14 bottles of preserved foetuses in an abandoned house in Ubon Ratchathani, a north-eastern province of the country.
Follow-up investigations led police to arrest ex-nurse Ura Sutthiwong.Sutthiwong was said to have obtained the foetuses from performing illegal abortions for the women.
She would them preserved the foetuses in a bottle each and kept them in an abandoned house while looking for prospective buyers.
It is commonly believed that the soul of Luk Krok can be "called out" from a foetuse after performing some chanting and ceremony.
According to Thai superstition, Luk Krok can bring wealth to its owner especially in winning lotteries.

Hi Nayan,
I got a feedback for you on the combination 5 amulet I got from you last week.
This is gonna sound really crazy but I felt the amulets vibrating like there was electric current going through them twice since I started wearing from last week. It happens only when I hugged two women (where I live it’s common to hug each other like European style when greeting) anyway first time was at dinner and I hugged a young lady and there was like an electric shock that went through the amulet…like not my imagination but I really felt it strong, kinda weird I thought… Then today I saw a girl that I was in classes with a long time ago and hadn’t seen for a while so I go to greet her and we hugged each other and ZAP!!! I got the current go through the amulets on my chest again as soon as we touch each other. So I don’t know if this is a good or bad thing; both these girls are really nice as far as I know so I don’t know if amulet is protecting me from them or it likes their energy too or what (maybe they are only nice to everyone in public but terrible on the inside)??? But there is definitely a strong power in this one. I feel really good to wear it and feel it’s making a difference.
Can I wear it in my pants pocket i.e ‘below the belt’? There are two amulets of a monk on it so I don’t know if this would be disrespectful but it is somewhat large and cumbersome to have 5 amulet on your chest at once so it would be nice to be able to put in the trouser pocket.
BTW I wonder if you found the instruction for the small gift amulet you sent me. It’s really mysterious and I would like to know what it is and how to use.

His weapon of choice, however, is neither the kung fu kick or the fortune cookie philosophy. Rode is a practitioner of the ancient art of using Tibetan bowls for healing and the self-styled “Tibetan singing bowl master” was in town earlier this month to conduct a series of therapy sessions at The Spa at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Kuala Lumpur. n an interview, I learn about the life of this fascinating man who is now making a living reviving a little known art that was practised by ancient Tibetan Buddhists. “I was a German hippie who left my native town of Dortmund to search for something in the mid 1970s,” he recalls, with a pronounced stutter. “I had studied Classical Greek and Roman philosophy in search of answers, but like many of my generation, my search led to India, and eventually I met a group of Tibetan exiles in Dharamsala.”
“There were many monks studying under the Dalai Lama, whom I eventually met, and became a disciple of. I knew that I had experienced healing when I met the monks, and that my search had ended.
“There was a lot of unhappiness in my childhood and young adulthood partly because of my speech impediment, but finally through karmic intent I found my home. In the late (19)70s I became a Buddhist monk.”
However Rode’s interesting life journey had a few more interesting twists to take. He left the monkhood in the early 1980s and married a German doctor working in India.
The couple, who separated five years ago, have two children (one of whom has followed in Rode’s footsteps by becoming a monk) and two grandchildren.
In the early 1990s, Rode found himself a singing bowl teacher in Nepal and after years of studying the ancient art, he became a fulltime practitioner in 2002.
While Rode does find it hard transporting his arsenal of bowls (he uses about a dozen bowls for each healing session), he now juggles his time between his base in Koh Samui, Thailand, and a home in Landsberg, Germany. Amazingly, he is also a seasonal theatre director in Germany!
“I don’t see a conflict between the various aspects of my life,’’ he says. “I now travel a lot with my work as a therapist, and I basically see it as my life’s work to bring people inner peace.”
Although what Rode practises may be centuries old, but surely there are some who dismiss it as mumbo-jumbo?
“Yes some call me a crazy yogi, but I believe that sound and light are universal. There are scientific explanations for why certain frequencies (emitted by the different bowls) provoke a better reaction in some people.
“The racing of the pulse, the perception of a colour ... this is all scientific information that enables me to make a diagnosis.”
“Besides there have been so many positive responses to my therapy that I don’t question the value of it.”
So what does a healing session involve?
Rode asked me to first allow myself to be blindfolded and then lie face down on a table in the Spa. He doesn’t speak much but his voice is soothing. He then strikes a series of metal bowls of different shapes and timbres while focussing on certain parts of my body and asking me to visualise a coloured ball of light.
According to Rode, these bowls, which are made of seven precious metals (including iron, lead, silver, gold, mercury and copper) have different frequencies that resonate with certain points of our body. The Buddhist Tantric system teaches that there are five chakras (energy points) in the body.
The first is located near the pubic bone and this correlates to the colour green and has a positive quality of generosity and a negative emotion of greed; the second lies 3cm below the navel and correlates to the colour orange and has a positive quality of wisdom and a negative emotion of ignorance; the third is the heart which correlates to the colour blue and has a positive quality of loving kindness and a negative emotion of jealousy and anger; the fourth is at the throat and correlates to the colour red and has a positive quality of peace and humility and a negative emotion of pride.
The last is the crown (top of the skull) which correlates to the colour white and has a positive quality of compassion and a negative emotion of distraction and desire.
By Rode’s reading, my inability to picture green and white indicated confusion which arose out of greed. I apparently also responded very stiffly to the treatment, leading him to deem me among the top 10% of patients he has treated who lead stressful and cluttered lives.
He also said that I had a good heart, but was now caught in a situation where I had to make judgements that were against my nature!
I must admit it felt rather surreal given some of my predicaments, and I was pondering how much of his “reading of my body” made sense, or if it was simply general enough to apply to anyone. Rode’s explanation that “bones are the best lie-detector” was rather eerie when he hit the nail on the head by saying I had sleeping problems since I was a child.
Rode’s final “solution” was that someone like me required at least three further sessions and had to be able to visualise a protective light blue colouring. Apparently, my life would be a lot easier if I listened to classical music in D minor!

Seen and unseen forces operate in daily Thai life. Flowers, incense, or food is placed in front of shops, on the bows of boats, in front of buddhist icons and spirit houses. Brightly-coloured ribbon is wrapped around trees or other objects. These are all offerings to the spirits that reside there. A cement pole near my house receives many gifts. There have been too many accidents at this pole and local residents are trying to placate its bad spirit. Keep your eyes open for these offerings when in Thailand and you will be amazed at how many you see.
When I told my Thai girlfriend at work I was writing about ghost and spirits she exclaimed, "Oh! Even when you just say the word 'ghost' the hair on my arm stands straight up! Look!" Indeed, every hair on her arm was in the vertical position.
'Yan' is the drawing of religious mystical symbols to protect the area from ghosts and bad spirits. Most automobiles, taxis, and busses are adorned with 'yan' and amulets to ensure safe trips. 'Yan' is also painted on the doors of houses to keep unwanted and unseen visitors outside.
Antiques are something that foreigners constantly seek out in Thailand. I have discovered that very often, Thai people absolutely do not want to possess objects that belong to a deceased person for fear of having the previous owner's ghost attached to the object. "Oh! Look at that beautiful desk! It would look wonderful in my living room!" my friend exclaimed at an antique shop to her Thai companion. "I would never buy that," he answered. "I would think of the person who had to work at that desk everyday. I would wonder if they were happy then and if they are happy now."
Asking around about ghosts provided the stories that follow.
Puthamonton is a town famous for its haunted bamboo grove. This bamboo grove is on the grounds of the Buddha Park so many monks reside and meditate there. Recently a novice monk became possessed by a ghost and was exorcised by other monks. Reports in Thai newspapers make this common knowledge to most people.
Supanburi is the home to a famous Thai country music singer Phum Phuang who died about eight years ago. When the villagers saw her ghost walking around they decided to build a shrine for her. This shrine now draws hundreds of people who try to receive winning lottery numbers from the deceased.
A cup filled with bamboo sticks with numbers written on them is shaken until a lucky stick falls to the ground. As the Thai national lottery occurs on the 1st and 16th of every month, this shrine is quite active in the days before the drawing. Pictures of this event were recently on the front page of a local Thai newspaper.
Fortune-tellers, mediums, and psychics get a lot of business in Thailand. They are not only consulted for winning lottery numbers, but also auspicious dates on which to conduct an event, or for advice in general life and love decisions.
A young couple who lived north of Ayutthaya recently committed suicide by hanging themselves. The woman was six months pregnant. A letter from the wife requested that the couple be cremated together. When the family tried to arrange this, two local temples refused to do so. Everyone was terrified that the couple would rise from the dead. They feared it was the ghost of Naan Naak returning again. A surgeon was called in and the baby was removed from the mother before the cremation could take place.
