vegetarian festival, perhaps mutilation rituals spring to mind. At ‘Kin Jay’, a Chinese festival, participants will pierce themselves with spears, axes, spikes and other unlikely objects through their cheeks. It is a purification ritual for channelling supernatural powers. Apparently, participants do not scar or bleed profusely after the self-torture. It happens from Sept 26 to Oct 6 yearly, so be sure to avoid it when you are on the island during that period.
